Cross-border Integration of the Functional Metropolitan Area of Bratislava

Beneficiaries & Territory

Bratislava, the Capital City of the Slovak republic

General Assembly of the Local Government of Győr-Moson-Sopron County

Slovak-Hungarian cross-border region of the city of Bratislava and the county of Győr-Moson-Sopron

Goal

Facilitate the cross-border integration of the functional metropolitan area of Bratislava which, during the last decades, gradually stretched over the state borders with Austria and Hungary. More than 13,000 Slovak citizens live in these two countries in the close vicinities of Bratislava.

The project aims to create the governance frameworks for the cross-border integration of the Hungarian functional zone and facilitate the inclusion of the new governance framework into the existing Slovak-Austrian frames, creating a trilateral cross-border reality.

Deepening the integration will improve the quality of life of its inhabitants.

Specific objectives

  • Facilitate knowledge exchange between the Slovak, Austrian and Hungarian stakeholders.
  • Create a platform for permanent consultation and the harmonisation of development plans.
  • Improve the participants’ readiness for dialogue, tolerance and ownership over the shared territory.
  • Identify the thematic fields where strategic cooperation can be developed.
  • Involve decision-makers and experts from the local and regional governments, professionals and representatives of local advocacy organisations and groups.

Planned activities

  • Organize two joint workshops to identify the thematic fields and strategic aims of cooperation with Austrian and Hungarian project partners, their mayors and neighbouring municipalities’ leaders as well as regional planners. The baum_cityregion model will be presented and the meetings will facilitate the negotiations around the challenges the settlements are facing due to the increasing cross-border suburbanisation. They will also facilitate future exchanges enabling the development of a joint development strategy and identify future working groups/expert committees to assist the implementation of the future strategy, and prepare joint projects.
  • Draft an action plan which contain future steps towards the integrated development strategy with milestones and potential calls and resources to be used. The action plan will also include the plan of integrating the Slovak-Hungarian structure into the existing Slovak-Austrian one.
  • Adopt rules of procedure for future cooperation through a steering body.
  • Organize a tri-partite closing event to promote the joint planning intervention and the creation of a new governance structure with local, regional and national authorities and experts in the fields of the project will be invited.
  • Disseminate the result of the pilot action through stakeholders’ websites, media relationships and social media.
